Honduras is a vibrant country, brimming with clear turquoise waters, pristine beaches, lush jungles, breathtaking mountains, challenging rivers, and fascinating ancient ruins. Vast expanses of Mother Nature are to be found everywhere. But the serenity and calmness of the country would come to a halt on September 23rd, when a moderate earthquake shook offshore of Honduras.
At approximately 7:48 a.m. a 5.8 magnitude earthquake was experienced off the coast of Honduras. The distance of the earthquake was in close proximity to neighboring countries, including Belize. Its exact location was 55 miles WNW of La Ceiba, 60 miles NE of San Pedro Sula, and 145 miles north of Tegucigalpa. Although earthquakes are very powerful and can cause major damage, in this instance, it did little or no damage at all. Still, residents of Honduras are taking every precaution necessary to prepare for these and other natural disasters.
The movement was felt as far as Belize. In the early morning exactly before the 8:00 a.m. rush hour, many residents felt the tremors. According to meteorologists, the earthquake was an intense quake, but was of no significance in terms of damage. The United States Geological survey reports that it measured 5.8 on the Richter scale and was recorded at 7:48 a.m., local time. It was felt across Belize as the earthquake’s epicenter was half way between La Ceiba and Punta Gorda. That epicenter was over 100 miles from Belize City, but there were reports of tremors coming from almost every neighborhood.
With its massive tremors, many Hondurans where woken up by an unusually strong quake. Fortunately, there were no damages to speak of within Honduras and other neighboring countries. Despite its proximity, Honduras has pretty much been spared from the disastrous earthquakes that have leveled many towns and cities in neighboring Nicaragua, Guatemala and San Salvador. The earthquake was indeed a close call and narrow escape for all and we wish everyone more luck for a long time.
