Mathaba RSS Alerts
Why is the box above so cool? How can I use it effectively?

What is this for?
Similar to Google News alerts, but we alert you via RSS, see below for more information. You can choose whatever keyword(s) you want to be alerted on, and if the word(s) all appear in any one of our articles, you will get notified of the headline of the article and a link so you can read it.

RSS, what's that?
See the left side of this page.

But why by RSS?
Because RSS has many advantages over Email, even though you can still get these alerts into your email (keep reading, we'll come to that.) Some of the advantages are that you get to choose where, when and how you are alerted, unlike with Email most of which never gets read (expired accounts, junk mail, too much to read...).

Give me some cool ideas?
First, get yourself a cool RSS reader if you don't already have one, or an RSS alerter. (See the left side of this page for some ideas). We recommend Thunderbird because this can be used for both Email and RSS and has many other advantages.

Then just use the box below (which you can also find at the bottom of any of our news articles), to create as many RSS alerts as you wish.

How do I start?
Easy. Just type the keyword or keywords that you want to get alerts for, whenever they appear in a news article. So if you want to be alerted for Your Company Name, put that into the box. But remember, if you want to get all alerts about either Toshiba OR Budapest, then you should put the 3 words: Toshiba OR Budapest into the box. If you want only articles that contain BOTH words, then you put Toshiba Budapest. So, if you have many interests, be sure to put OR between each word, or make many seperate alerts, unless all the words must be found within a single story.

Then just copy the http address from the top of your browser on the page that will come up when you press the button, and paste that into your RSS reader or alerter. Bloggers, site owners, add headlines to your site.

Example entries showing use of " ", AND, OR:

  • "green book" OR "world center " OR "world centre" AND libya
  • "hugo chavez" OR "venezuela president" OR "venezuelan president"
  • protest OR demonstration
  • italy AND demonstration OR italy AND protest

What is RSS

RSS, sometimes known as Really Simple Syndication, is a popular means of sharing content (such as news headlines) without requiring readers to constantly visit a Web site to see what's new. RSS feeds contain headlines and hyperlinks to longer articles or Web pages. Mathaba's feeds are free of charge.

How can I receive RSS feeds?

Software programs known as news readers or aggregators can collect, update and display RSS feeds from a wide variety of sources. A number of news readers are available for you to download, many at no cost. Other versions are Web and browser-based. News readers vary slightly in how they look and act, so you may find yourself testing several before settling on one. Google lists a number of news aggregators, none of which are associated with Mathaba, that you can download & try e.g. from here, or you can use MathabaLive. If you have a PDA then see here. If you use Ubuntu or Linux, see here.
